Devious Panda Ltd releases Salmon Finder v 2.0

As fans of both fishing throughout Alaska and of eating wild-caught salmon, the developers at Devious Panda Ltd are excited to announce the significant upgrades to Salmon Finder. Available today in both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store, Salmon Finder v2.0 brings a new look, and full features to Alaskan fishers.

In the app’s second year of existence, the app has provided users with a geographic display of Alaska’s Department of Fish & Game’s fish count data.

In version 2.0, Devious Panda has made some great changes.

  • Standardization of count data – ADF+G tracks Salmon runs with granularity that is generally not useful for fishermen. For example, version 2.0 consolidates all Sockeye counts from three sets (general, early-run, and late-run) into a single dataset for users. The data is more directly accessed by fisherman in the new form.
  • Normal tracking season – Salmon Finder version 2.0 considers a 123-day season to be the standard season for tracking, allowing all data to be consistently displayed.
  • Improved count visualization – in addition to the normal 123-day season, and the improvement to the graphical visualization, Salmon Finder 2.0 uses color ranges to demonstrate the “heat” of each individual day. Green indicates a “go” day for fishing aficionados; red indicates a “slow” day.
  • Added annual trends – The new version includes annual totals graphed for the past 24 years (where the data is available), helping users understand the periodic nature of the salmon runs.
  • No paywall – Version 2.0 has changed the financial model of the app. Instead of limiting users to smaller amounts of data, the most recent year’s data only, the new version has removed all restrictions for all users. Instead of handicapping the app and demanding payment, Salmon Finder v2.0 is full-featured for everyone, but includes the ability for users to “tip” the developers in several ways, ranging from one-time support of $9.99 or $24.99, to an annual subscription of $24.99.
  • No ads – Devious Panda developers hate it when software developers ruin their apps with ads. We don’t do this. We also do not include any cross-app tracking or GPS- based surveillance.
  • Notifications – The real value of the app comes as the season gets rolling, and fishermen will, instead of waking up early to check the previous day’s counts, receive notifications from the app. “Yesterday at Anchor River, ADF+G recorded 31 steelhead. Fish are trending up.” Notifications will begin in mid-May, as counts get started.

According to Dave Loftis, Devious Panda’s Managing Director, “we love chasing fish of all types all over Alaska, and we are dedicated to supporting anyone who wants to get our on the river, and we think Salmon Finder version 2.0 is the most useful technology available in support of anyone fishing in Alaskan waters.”

This season is going to be great, and we’re excited for it.
